  • Greet Spring with the Beautiful Aquamarine

March comes “in like a lion and out like a lamb,” two attitudes represented by its two birthstones: bloodstone’s bright red and dark green, and the cool and calming aquamarine.
aquamarineThe clear blue-green aquamarine gets its name from the Latin word aqua, meaning “water,” and marina, meaning “sea.” It’s appropriate that this gem is March’s birthstone, as most of the month falls under the astrological sign “Pisces,” which is symbolized by a fish.
In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the stones were said to bring good fortune to sailors. In old lore, the stones were said to be the treasure of the mermaids and was endowed with many positive properties: aquamarine is fabled to revive the love of married couples, treat lung and eye disorders, and relieve anxiety, fear and restlessness.
Today, the pretty stone is the perfect complement to spring fashions. The blue-green color varies in intensity, with the brightest tones existing in larger stones. The stones are found mostly in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique.
March’s alternate birthstone is Bloodstone, a dark-green stone flecked with bright red spots of iron oxide.
bloodstoneAncient Babylonian myths tell tales of the stones having healing powers, and it was used to make amulets and seals.  It was also said to heal blood disorders and that simply touching the stones would stop bleeding.
Also called the “martyr’s stone,” some stories say that the stone was created when drops of Christ’s blood landed on some jasper at the foot of the cross.
Today the rocks are embedded in riverbeds as pebbles and are found mainly in India, Brazil and Australia.
But you don’t need to go to Africa or South America to get Aquamarine or Bloodstone: Visit your local Cash America shop or the National Jewelry Liquidation Center in Las Vegas to find the best deals on the best jewelry. Get a beautiful March birthstone piece for a special person in your life today!

  • Enova Developers Recognized Internationally for Industry Innovation

    Enova developers recognized internationally
By: Kaitlin Arntz, Enova Public Affairs

The 17th International Conferences on Extending Database Technology and Database Theory are joining forces this year, bringing together database researchers, practitioners, developers and users to share their latest discoveries in the world of data management. With a paper entitled Talking to the Database in a Semantically Rich Way, Enova database architect Henrietta Dombrovskaya and developer Richard Lee have been included in this prestigious international event, and join the ranks of fellow data managers tasked with bringing their industry into the future.

While it would be an understatement to say that the contents of Dombrovskaya and Lee’s paper are complex, the overarching message of the paper is simple: We can improve the way we deliver our data. Essentially, Enova’s rapid growth as a company and swift acquisition of customers over the past few years has resulted in the company depending on a data-delivery system ill-equipped for the current volume. This lack of efficiency can lead, at times, to longer wait times for customers, and this is not an issue unique to Enova or the payday loan industry. Over the past year, Dombrovskaya, Lee and their team of developers have been able to spend much of their time working to solve this issue, a luxury Henrietta claims has much to do with the Enova approach to collaboration and innovation.

“The way to improve our application performance is in collaboration; going beyond our normal roles,” Dombrovskaya said. “Innovation is so appreciated. People are willing to try new approaches.”

The result of all this work is Talking to the Database in a Semantically Rich Way, a paper that presents a system perfectly positioned to restructure the way an application interacts with a database. While the results are still preliminary, thus far the new system shows a significant improvement on delivery speeds, with the potential to increase the speed of data delivery hundreds of times over.

After holding conferences in Cambridge, Prague, Berlin and Rome, this year’s joint conference will take place in Athens, Greece, from March 24 to 28.

More information can be found at the event website located here

  • Get Your Valentine the Gift of Amethyst: February’s Birthstone

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you can give your special someone an amethyst, a beautiful purple stone with colors ranging from palest lilac to violet to a deep, darkest purple.

Ancient Greeks and Romans used amethyst to keep them safe from the powers of Bacchus, the god of wine and intoxication. In fact, amethyst is a variation of the Greek word amethystos, which means remedy against drunkenness.

Some civilizations thought the stone helped keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted, while others reported the stones to aid in memory loss, alleviate headaches and heal bone and heart problems. The stones were also a symbol of royalty during the Middle Ages.

Amethyst is a variety of crystallized quartz, and today is mostly used in jewelry. Brazil is the primary source for amethysts, but the stone can also be found in Uruguay and Zambia.

But no need for a passport to get this beautiful stone for your February-born loved ones: Cash America has jewelry in modern and traditional settings of gold, white gold and platinum! Visit your local Cash America shop near you or the National Jewelry Liquidation Center in Las Vegas to find great deals on quality jewelry.

  • Classic Comeback

Whether you’re creating art with a camera or guitar, or making a statement with a handbag or piece of jewelry, retro holds priceless appeal and allows your brand of style to shine. If Cash America isn’t the first name you think of when it comes to affordable style, maybe you should reconsider: all kinds of jewelry, musical instruments and electronics can be yours, often for substantially less than retail prices — and all backed by our 30-Day Guarantee.

Each Cash America, SuperPawn, and Cashland Pawn Lite store has different retail offerings, and you may never know what you can find! If you’re a fashionista, a collector, or you want to invest in a new hobby, Cash America may offer more charm than anything on a big box store’s shelves today!

It’s probably no coincidence that Instagram’s most popular filters are vintage. While antique cameras are actually capable of producing even higher-quality images than modern cameras, you can also experience the sheer shutterbug bliss that ensues from winding the film in a vintage Nikon® or Leica® SLR. If digital is your medium, why pay more for the same name-brand product?

Classic instruments’ design elements are often duplicated on modern makes, but the material and sound quality just can’t be matched. Heirloom-quality watches stand the test of time for both serviceability and style; that’s why the elegant lines of a vintage Rolex® or Cartier® are so recognizable. The same goes for vintage handbags and jewelry.

Let’s face it: retro is really cool. So for this spring, try in with the old and out with the new! Not only does the past open a window to craftsmanship and innovation, but it looks super chic, too! Use our store locator to check out the Cash America stores near you, and don’t forget the Cash America eBay store and National Jewelry Liquidation Center, too.

  • Ring in 2014 with January’s Birthstone: the Garnet

    By: Angela Ross

Garnets have been associated with many ancient traditions and legends as the "traveler’s gemstone": Noah from the Bible was thought to use a garnet lamp to light his way during the flood. It was also thought by ancient people to promote health as well as romantic love, passion, sensuality and intimacy.

Egyptians used garnets in their jewelry, and their lore references the stone as early as 3100 B.C. In medieval times, the stones were said to cure depression, prevent bad dreams and relieve diseases of the liver.

Victorians favored the gem for fashionable jewelry,  and royals were known to adorn themselves with copious amounts of the stones.

In more recent times, the stone symbolizes friendship and trust and is the perfect post-holiday gift for your special someone.

Is red not your color? The stone is not confined to its well-known deep red.  It is available in pink, purple, brown, black, colorless, yellow and orange. While some of the stones are mined all over the world, most are found in Africa, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic and India.

But you don’t need to travel the world to get a quality garnet — in whatever color you desire! Visit your local Cash America shop or the National Jewelry Liquidation Center in Las Vegas to find the best deals on the best jewelry!

  • Sit Up Straight in 2014!

    By: Mitzie Tucker

A New Year’s resolution most people overlook is the chance to improve their poor office setup or work habits, which can lead to fatigue, loss of productivity, and in some cases even injury. Resolve to skip the pain relievers this year and get comfy at work!

    • Make sure to choose a desk that has enough clearance for your legs when your feet are at a 90-degree angle with the ground. Contact your HR department or office manager to see if you have staff ergonomics specialist and, if possible, consider going to a part-time standing workstation.

    • Choose a chair that fully supports your spine and is adjustable for your height. Have a coworker take a photo of you at the start and end of a day; this will allow you to see what a long day does to your posture and if you need to improve it.

    • Invest in a monitor that can configure easily: the top should be slightly at or below eye level and about an arm’s length away. Also, watch out for glare on your screen, as eye stain is a common issue for office workers.

    • Consider upgrading your mouse to a trackpad or trackball from brands like Apple and Logitech, which require less movement and are more ergonomically sound than a traditional mouse.

    • If you make a lot of calls, purchase a phone that supports a Bluetooth headset. Never ever use the ear-shoulder method, which is bad for your neck.

    • The cheapest and easiest change you can make is to set an alarm on your computer to remind you to move around for at least five minutes every hour: take a water break, a brief walk, or even do some gentle calisthenics.

These may all seem like small changes, but they add up to an overall sense of health and well-being that every body and mind deserve — this year and every year! Give it a try!

  • Veterans Day Salute

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and commemorated the end of hostilities in WWI. The ceasefire that was a prelude to the Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI, went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — or 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

A congressional resolution in 1926 declared that Armistice Day would be celebrated on the same day and the same time, and should “…be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations… with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.”

Cash America salutes Veterans DayArmistice Day was made into a legal holiday in 1938; after WWII and Korea, the name was changed to Veterans Day to include all of those who served in order to keep both America and the world free from tyranny.

Attempts at celebrating Veterans Day on Mondays like other national holidays were unsuccessful, as both the day and time remain symbolically important. According to the VA, Veterans Day is “A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

As a thank you to all servicemembers for their patriotism, Cash America extends a special offer to all active duty and retired veterans: a coupon for 25% off an entire purchase on November 11 at any Cash America, Cashland, or SuperPawn location.

  • Show Your True Colors with Topaz, November's Birthstone

    By Melodie Hopkins

People with November birthdays have the versatile Topaz for one of their birthstones. This stone comes in a rainbow of colors such as red, yellow, pink, purple, orange and blue.

Cash America TopazSome ancient cultures prized topaz because it was reported to control heat. Fables also say that the stone could cool boiling water and lessen anger. The stone is also rumored to lower fever.

Topaz is a relatively expensive stone because it is so rare. However, its prices do not rival diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. One of the most prized topaz colors is the Imperial Topaz, a favorite of the Russian Czars, which has a deep orange with pinkish undertones.

But people with November birthdays can choose an alternate birthstone: Citrine.Cash America's Citrine It ranges in colors from pale yellow to brownish orange, and it is much less expensive than Topaz because it is so plentiful.

The citrine is known as the “healing quartz.” It is rumored to increase vitality, health and a sense of well-being for the wearer. It also reported to grant the wearer success and prosperity.

Whether you want a rare stone or something more affordable, Cash America is your go-to jewelry store. All of our gems are carefully evaluated for quality and we have the most popular settings in gold, white gold and platinum.
