  • Geared Up for Diabetes Donations!

By Tom Bessant, Chief Financial Officer

The first day of school brings with it lots of worries for kids. What am I going to wear?  Will I like my new teacher?  Will any of my friends be in my class?

Unfortunately though, for the more than 15,000 children diagnosed every year with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the biggest worry is how to avoid a blood sugar crash during the day.  In addition to their daily insulin shots, those with T1D have to monitor their blood sugar levels, carbohydrate intake, as well as have a consistent exercise regimen on a daily basis.

Having raised more than $2 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in the past 11 years, Cash America is proud to partner with JDRF for the twelfth year to work toward finding better treatments and a cure for this disease.  Our 2012 JDRF Campaign—which kicks off Monday, September 10 and runs through Saturday, October 20—features a company-wide paper sneaker selling campaign. At the corporate office, employees participate in fundraising activities and an annual Executive-sponsored softball tournament.

“Each year, our customers and coworkers raise the fundraising bar tremendously,” said Campaign Coordinator Paige Blankenship. “This year, our goal is set at $500,000—an all-time high for us—and I am confident that together, our loyal customers and motivated coworkers will have another record-breaking year.”

We hope you can help us achieve this goal by visiting one of our shops and making a donation to this worthwhile endeavor.

    By Jim, Operations Director

Cash America keeps growing and with every new beginning comes an exciting grand opening! Grand openings are great opportunities for us to meet new people in our communities. We enjoy building relationships with our neighbors, who regularly attend our events.

Giovanni Garibay, Cash America Government Relations Director, cuts the ribbon with local officials at a grand opening celebration in El Paso, Texas on June 15.

Local dignitaries, city representatives and Chamber of Commerce members often make appearances for our ribbon cutting ceremonies. And our grand openings wouldn’t be complete without the local fire and police departments invited to attend, geared with information about ways to keep safe in our communities. Visitors enjoy learning more about our products and services and how our business works.

Cash America employees pose in front of a new store at a grand opening in Houston on April 14.

Our grand openings offer discounted merchandise and feature giveaway items and fun family activities. We take pride in our bright, clean, fun store atmospheres and invite you to come see what we have to offer. Our new locations are popping up nationwide and we’d love to see you at our next grand opening event!

  • Chi-Town - It's My Kind of Town!

By Steve Rhodes, Region Vice President

We love the “Windy City” and the surrounding areas of Chicago. So much that Cash America’s presence in and around the third largest city in the United States has recently grown.

Cash America has opened eight new locations in the Chicago area since 2012 with two more planned openings this year. Our grand openings in the Chicago area have drawn local mayors, aldermen, city leaders and police and fire chiefs.

Chicago has long been known for its spectacular skyline, tourist attractions and world-famous, deep-dish pizza. Downtown visitors beam at views of Lake Michigan, Navy Pier and The Magnificent Mile. And, few can visit the city without going to a Chicago Cubs™ game, or at least getting a close-up view of the famous Wrigley Field.

A walk around downtown offers many options for visitors. Millennium Park and The Art Institute of Chicago will please any art lover and shopping on Michigan Avenue never disappoints even the truest shop-a-holics.

  • The Cash America Difference

    By Steve, Market Manager

Customers often come into our stores with an urgent need for cash. Sometimes life’s unexpected situations happen, and that’s when we’re here to help.

We offer small-dollar, short-term loans in varying amounts depending on state law.1 When it comes to financial alternatives, cash advances provide a convenient choice not offered by traditional financial institutions.

    What makes us different?

    • We abide by industry Best Practices in all of our transactions.
    • We educate our customers about the importance of making responsible financial choices.
    • Our employees are professional, treat customers with respect, explain the conditions of the loan and make the transactions simple and fast.
    • We work regularly with trade associations to provide quality, professional and affordable products.
    • We offer an extended payment plan at no additional cost so (if allowed by state law) customers can make smaller payments they can afford over time.

Sometimes the unexpected happens and we strive to be there for our customers to offer financial options for each situation.

    1. An advance of money obtained through a small-dollar, short term loan is not intended to meet long-term financial needs. A small-dollar, short term loan should only be used to meet immediate short-term cash needs. Refinancing the loan rather than paying the debt in full when due will require the payment of additional charges.  Loan amounts vary.  Subject to lender's credit standards. Certain employment, income, residence and bank account qualifications required for approval.  Complete disclosure of interest rates, fees and payment terms are provided prior to each cash advance.

  • Internships: The Key for Post-Grads

By Clint Janyes, SVP of Human Resources

Great leadership begins with recruiting and training the best talent, which is why Cash America developed a paid internship program in 2007.

“These days most companies won’t consider you without internship experience,” said Learning and Development Intern Hannah Kunneman. “My time at Cash America has helped prepare me for a great career and gives me an advantage when applying for full-time jobs after graduation.”

Research shows that internships are essential in securing employment after college. Internships have become so important that in a 2011 survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 86 percent of surveyed companies claimed they use internships to recruit college students for future employment.

“We’ve worked to add more structure to the Cash America internship program and it has grown significantly from five interns in 2007 to nine participating in our program this year – the largest group to date,” said Corporate Human Resources Recruiter Nneka Ladday. “At Cash America we aim to make our internships exciting and challenging, while offering real-world relevance.”

From interacting with top executives, including the CEO, to building a business portfolio, the experience our interns gain is priceless. We have adopted a mentor state of mind that nurtures talent and guides interns onto their career path.

At Cash America we strive to create a positive experience for our customers and we know this can only be achieved by recruiting and retaining the best employees. Our employees are our most valuable asset and without their hard work and dedication to our customers’ financial needs, Cash America would not be a leader in the financial services industry.

  • “Let Freedom Ring!”

During this busy time of year filled with action-packed summer activities, it’s heartwarming to spend a day celebrating America’s independence from Great Britain on the Fourth of July! We remember those who fought for (and continue to fight for) our freedom and we are fortunate to call the United States of America our home.

Here are some fun Fourth of July facts to share with others. . .

    •    The youngest of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Lynch Jr. (27) and the oldest was Benjamin Franklin (70).
    •    The initial date the resolution of independence was approved (in a closed session of Congress) was July 2, 1776.
    •    Congress revised the declaration for final approval on July 4, 1776.
    •    The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as U.S. Presidents were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
    •    Every Fourth of July, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not actually rung) 13 times in honor of the original 13 colonies.

Enjoy your fun-filled day of patriotic parades, concerts, fireworks and cookouts and have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July!

  • “Backing the Blue!”

    By Matt, Market Manager

At Cash America, we take pride in knowing our customers have great experiences when they visit our stores. Each location is a clean, family-friendly atmosphere where customers feel safe doing business. As part of our strong commitment to community involvement, we work hand-in-hand with law enforcement officials to support safety initiatives.

Public safety is so important to us that we made it one of our five key areas of charitable giving and community partnerships. We routinely work with local police departments during various customer and neighborhood events.

Officers often attend our grand openings and promote safety programs, including the National Child Identification Program, which allows parents to keep their child’s fingerprint and vital statistics on hand in case of an emergency.

Cash America was one of the first in our industry to report transactions to Leads Online, a website that helps police identify possible stolen items.

We also play an active role in National Night Out programs throughout the nation - a crime and drug prevention community event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. This program allows us the opportunity to build relationships with our neighbors and local law enforcement partners and helps strengthen communities through crime prevention awareness!

  • 10 Ways to Beat the Heat this Summer

    By Dion, Market Manager

While many of us have been experiencing warmer weather for quite some time, June 20 marks the official first day of summer.  During this time of year, we often participate in outdoor activities such as barbecues, relaxing in the pool or outdoor sporting events. While spending time outside is fun, we also know temperatures can heat up quickly, and we all have to be mindful of safety.

As you kick off summertime activities, keep these tips in mind to beat the heat!

    •    Plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. Early morning and evening can be much more inviting for outdoor summer fun.
    •    Wear lightweight clothing made of natural fibers, such as cotton, to help keep your body temperature down.
    •    Maintain hydration by drinking plenty of cool water throughout the day.
    •    Avoid heating up the kitchen (and the rest of the house) by preparing lighter meals that don’t require cooking, such as salads and sandwiches.
    •    Close blinds or shades during the heat of the day to keep the house cool.

    •    Use ceiling fans and portable fans to increase air circulation in the house.
    •    Replace air conditioner filters frequently to ensure maximum efficiency and cooling.
    •    Apply and reapply sunscreen as needed to protect your skin from burning and harmful UV rays.
    •    Know your limits and take breaks if you feel overheated during outdoor summer activities.
    •    Plan indoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Summer is a time of celebration with family and friends, and Cash America is here to help. Whether you are in need of a new fan, window air conditioning unit or anything else for your home, visit Cash America to help beat the heat while enjoying your summer!

  • Cash America’s Secret to Success

By Dan Feehan, President and Chief Executive Officer

To be successful, I believe you need to find the right balance between your work and personal lives. I see this as a three-legged stool - work, personal and family-life. When one leg is shorter than the others, the stool is off-balance and not functional, but when all three legs are even the stool stands strong and stable.

Cash America’s coworkers help their children with homework, care for elderly parents, find time for their significant others and much more. By prioritizing our time and commitments, we achieve happiness in all areas of our life. The pleasure we glean from our work, family, religious beliefs, hobbies and activities blends into each other and our lives are more fulfilling as a result of it.

At Cash America, we take care of our employees and treat them with dignity, and in turn, they do the same for our customers. When our coworkers are able to achieve balance in all aspects of their lives we see it reflected in their attitudes and it shows every day in their dedication to our customers. When you come into one of our stores you are not a business transaction; you are a person with real needs and dreams and we strive to help you achieve all of your goals.

I invite you into one of our stores to experience our customer-friendly team firsthand. Get to know your local Cash America team and let them assist you during your time of need or just help you find something new to purchase. After all, you are part of our family and we appreciate your loyalty.

  • Vacation Mode: Just a Click Away!

    By Melodie, Market Manager

Put away the phones, lock-up the laptop and stock up on sunscreen - it’s time to get in vacation mode! For most trips, all you really need is a great camera and a comfy pair of shoes. After all, vacation is all about being in the moment, creating photo ops and being far, far away from your daily routine.

With Memorial Day marking the start of summer travel, it makes me reflect on vacations I have taken throughout the years. I’m so glad I’ve always photo-journaled each of my adventures. Even if it was just camping or a day trip to explore a nearby town, I enjoy carrying those memories with me and being able to peek back at them days, weeks and years later.

In preparation for the travel season, many of you will buy cameras to capture your special vacation moments, and it’s always good to put some thought into these purchases.

A few things to keep in mind when searching for a good travel camera:
    •    Compact and lightweight
    •    Does it have a zoom and flash?
    •    Do you want video?
    •    Battery preference (Do you like rechargeable or disposable?)
    •    Delay time (Test the camera to see how fast it snaps.)
    •    Storage size

Should your shutterbugging get more serious and extend outside of vacation time, you may also consider a camera with manually adjustable settings, interchangeable lenses and even different formats of film cameras.

We carry a variety of cameras in our stores that fit just about any vacation mode and there’s no better time to get started collecting memories than now. Happy Memorial Day!

  • From Pawnshop Kid to Professional

    By Angela, Market Manager

As a child I often frequented pawnshops with my father. He was always looking for a good deal and a collection of movies for me. Saturday mornings were spent making the tour of area pawnshops where we would scout out the VHS collection, while also looking for video games. He usually bought a few tools for the yard or other ‘grown-up’ things, but what I remember most is the time I spent with my dad - it was our weekend of fun.

As an adult with a career in the pawn industry, I always remember those weekends and how much we enjoyed our purchases. When a family enters our shop I want them to have the same feeling I had as a child – excitement, fun and entertainment! Our shops are brightly lit, customer-focused and safe environments.

As I’ve come to appreciate the ‘grown-up’ reasons to visit a pawnshop, I love my career even more. We provide our customers with quality merchandise for up to 70 percent off the retail price. We carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on our products and provide a layaway program for those items you need a little more time to buy. I wouldn’t want to be in any other industry.

I hope you bring your family in to visit my Cash America family, and you might just find a weekend of fun!
