While many of us have been experiencing warmer weather for quite some time, June 20 marks the official first day of summer. During this time of year, we often participate in outdoor activities such as barbecues, relaxing in the pool or outdoor sporting events. While spending time outside is fun, we also know temperatures can heat up quickly, and we all have to be mindful of safety.
As you kick off summertime activities, keep these tips in mind to beat the heat!
• Plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. Early morning and evening can be much more inviting for outdoor summer fun.
• Wear lightweight clothing made of natural fibers, such as cotton, to help keep your body temperature down.
• Maintain hydration by drinking plenty of cool water throughout the day.
• Avoid heating up the kitchen (and the rest of the house) by preparing lighter meals that don’t require cooking, such as salads and sandwiches.
• Close blinds or shades during the heat of the day to keep the house cool.
• Use ceiling fans and portable fans to increase air circulation in the house.
• Replace air conditioner filters frequently to ensure maximum efficiency and cooling.
• Apply and reapply sunscreen as needed to protect your skin from burning and harmful UV rays.
• Know your limits and take breaks if you feel overheated during outdoor summer activities.
• Plan indoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
