Sit Up Straight in 2014!

By: Mitzie Tucker

A New Year’s resolution most people overlook is the chance to improve their poor office setup or work habits, which can lead to fatigue, loss of productivity, and in some cases even injury. Resolve to skip the pain relievers this year and get comfy at work!

  • Make sure to choose a desk that has enough clearance for your legs when your feet are at a 90-degree angle with the ground. Contact your HR department or office manager to see if you have staff ergonomics specialist and, if possible, consider going to a part-time standing workstation.

  • Choose a chair that fully supports your spine and is adjustable for your height. Have a coworker take a photo of you at the start and end of a day; this will allow you to see what a long day does to your posture and if you need to improve it.

  • Invest in a monitor that can configure easily: the top should be slightly at or below eye level and about an arm’s length away. Also, watch out for glare on your screen, as eye stain is a common issue for office workers.

  • Consider upgrading your mouse to a trackpad or trackball from brands like Apple and Logitech, which require less movement and are more ergonomically sound than a traditional mouse.

  • If you make a lot of calls, purchase a phone that supports a Bluetooth headset. Never ever use the ear-shoulder method, which is bad for your neck.

  • The cheapest and easiest change you can make is to set an alarm on your computer to remind you to move around for at least five minutes every hour: take a water break, a brief walk, or even do some gentle calisthenics.

These may all seem like small changes, but they add up to an overall sense of health and well-being that every body and mind deserve — this year and every year! Give it a try!
