Greet Spring with the Beautiful Aquamarine

March comes “in like a lion and out like a lamb,” two attitudes represented by its two birthstones: bloodstone’s bright red and dark green, and the cool and calming aquamarine.

aquamarineThe clear blue-green aquamarine gets its name from the Latin word aqua, meaning “water,” and marina, meaning “sea.” It’s appropriate that this gem is March’s birthstone, as most of the month falls under the astrological sign “Pisces,” which is symbolized by a fish.

In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the stones were said to bring good fortune to sailors. In old lore, the stones were said to be the treasure of the mermaids and was endowed with many positive properties: aquamarine is fabled to revive the love of married couples, treat lung and eye disorders, and relieve anxiety, fear and restlessness.

Today, the pretty stone is the perfect complement to spring fashions. The blue-green color varies in intensity, with the brightest tones existing in larger stones. The stones are found mostly in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique.

March’s alternate birthstone is Bloodstone, a dark-green stone flecked with bright red spots of iron oxide.

bloodstoneAncient Babylonian myths tell tales of the stones having healing powers, and it was used to make amulets and seals.  It was also said to heal blood disorders and that simply touching the stones would stop bleeding.

Also called the “martyr’s stone,” some stories say that the stone was created when drops of Christ’s blood landed on some jasper at the foot of the cross.

Today the rocks are embedded in riverbeds as pebbles and are found mainly in India, Brazil and Australia.
