Meet the Market: Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio and the surrounding area is a sports town. As home to the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Blue Jackets of the NHL, MLS’s Columbus Crew, and even a AAA affiliate of the Cleveland Indians (the Columbus Clippers), it’s no wonder.

“I would say it’s a huge sports-crazy town,” said Midwest region Operations Director Brad Himmeger.

The sports frenzy, though, centers around Ohio State University. The university’s main campus, which is in the center of Columbus, has nearly 60,000 students. Ohio Stadium, where they buckeyes play football, is one of the most recognizable sports venues in college sports. Seating nearly 105,000, the stadium is the fourth largest on-campus facility in the nation.

Buckeye football also is near the top in the nation for attendance at home games.

With national championship crowns in football, baseball and men’s basketball, the Buckeye faithful have a lot to be happy about.

Columbus’ population is about 832,000, but the surrounding area, including towns such as Bellefontaine, London and Marion, boosts the greater Columbus metropolitan area’s population to 2.3 million people.

But Columbus isn’t only about sports.

Hidden gems like Bellefontaine boast the nation’s oldest concrete street: It was built in 1891 with what was then known as “that new-fangled” stone, according to RoadsiteAmerica.com.  Built in 1891, the contractor promised the city the road would last for five years — 123 years later, part of it is still there.

And London, Ohio, which recently celebrated its 200th birthday, is home to the Strawberry Festival and the Ribs and Jazz festival every summer.

But one of the best things about the Columbus area is the approximately 25 Cashland shops where residents and students alike can get loans and find great deals on all sorts of essentials for the dorm room or worksite, like gaming systems, power tools, electronics, jewelry and more.

Of course, that’s true of all Cash America, Cashland, and SuperPawn stores. Find a location near you and discover a hidden gem or two of your own!
