Veterans Day 2014

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and commemorated the end of hostilities in WWI. The ceasefire that was a prelude to the Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI, went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — or 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

A congressional resolution in 1926 declared that Armistice Day would be celebrated on the same day and the same time, and should “…be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations… with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.”

Armistice Day was made into a legal holiday in 1938; after WWII and Korea, the name was changed to Veterans Day to include all of those who served in order to keep both America and the world free from tyranny.

Attempts at celebrating Veterans Day on Mondays like other national holidays were unsuccessful, as both the day and time remain symbolically important.

According to the VA, Veterans Day is “A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”
